Omega and Okada: A match made in heaven

Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada are the two best wrestlers on the planet right now…

Many mainstream wrestling fans seem to be unaware of the fact that the wrestling world outside of the WWE is broad and amazing. Make no mistake, the WWE is still the pinnacle of franchise entertainment – but the competitors outside the company are doing pretty well both competitively and financially. Two such men are Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada. While Vince McMahon and co. are endlessly caught up in a feud between Roman Reigns and Jinder Mahal, Okada and Omega treated us to yet another blockbuster at New Japan Pro Wrestling Dominion 6.9 for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. It is being widely quoted as the “best wrestling match ever.”

Bringing out the best in each other

The biggest factor that makes this rivalry iconic is the bond between the two in the ring as both Omega and Okada complement each other brilliantly. Coming up against each other, they have constantly delivered some of the highest rated matches in wrestling history. Their will to win at any cost is clearly visible during the matches, which subsequently turns the intensity up a notch.

Kazuchika Okada has undoubtedly been the best wrestler in the world for the past four years, and one of the greatest IWGP World Heavyweight Champions in New Japan Pro Wrestling history. During that period, Omega has repeatedly been on his case. The matches against The Cleaner have helped Okada attain the legendary status in the world of wrestling – and similarly, The Rainmaker brought Kenny Omega into the limelight. This rivalry has been so intense that it has drawn comparisons with the illustrious Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat feud.

Kenny Omega’s rise to the summit has been gradual. Initially starting out as a mid-cart in the NJPW, he has worked his way to the top. He is a complete wrestler with unrivalled charisma in the ring. His push started when he joined the Bullet Club, at that time under leadership of AJ Styles. Later, he succeeded Styles as the leader of the faction – but his big break came when he faced Kazuchika Okada and put in the performance of his career.

It established Omega as one of the top guys in NJPW. He then defeated Chris Jericho at Wrestle Kingdom 12 with the IWGP United States Championship on the line. After delivering some top-quality matches against Kazuchika Okada, he finally got the better of him for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship in a two-out-of-three falls match. It was an exhausting encounter – but ultimately Omega came out on top, establishing himself as the undisputed best in the world.
