José Mourinho left hanging at the bridge

The pressure is piling on The Red Devils as José Mourinho remains desperate for points…

Club football is finally back after the much-hated international break. All eyes are on ‘The Special One’ as he returns to Stamford Bridge in his third year as Manchester United’s manager. His side are currently sitting 8th in the table and the Portuguese manager needs to conjure up points to save his job. The Red Devils have managed to secure only one win in their last sixteen away games against Chelsea. In addition to this, José Mourinho has lost four of his last five away matches against sides he has formerly managed.

The odds seem to be against Mourinho’s men, but many believe José is the only man who can turn this around and avert his third season curse. However, Paul Scholes doesn’t seem to think so. The former United legend has been very public with his criticism of the ex-Real Madrid coach. The Englishman has proclaimed that he’s not the right man for the job and even lashed out in a recent interview. “I loved watching his interviews, his cockiness. I thought he was brilliant, but that José has gone. Now it’s just a moaning José, which frustrates you. He’s moaning at his players and what he hasn’t got.” He went on to berate the entire team by saying, “I feel like people at Liverpool and Man City are looking at us and laughing like we did at them many years ago.”

Gary Neville, on the other hand, has been backing José Mourinho and encouraging United to stick with their current gaffer. However, the club’s former right-back wasn’t the only one to come out in support of José. Arsenal legend David Seaman chipped in with some surprising words as he responded to Paul Scholes’ comments by emphasising the complicated nature of coaching players when they’re not exactly the players you want. “I don’t think José’s got the players he wanted,” Seaman continued. “He can try and make them better but there’s only so much a manager can do, a lot of it is down to the players. If you look at it, the players aren’t playing to their capacity.”

It’s no surprise that the summer transfer market was a disaster for the red side of Manchester. José Mourinho wasn’t given the signings he asked for, including big names like Jerome Boateng and Toby Alderweireld. Even so, the season is up and running and Mou needs to get things right with the players he has at his disposal. Manchester United’s philosophy of sticking with managers and granting them time to build their teams already went out the window when David Moyes and Louis van Gaal were sacked after disappointing stints. To avoid the same fate as his predecessors, he needs the team to give a decent performance against Chelsea. With the Portuguese tactician already dancing on a very thin line, will he get the last laugh at Stamford Bridge?
